Default a preposition question

The Janissaries were mainly recruited ---- conquered Christian lands and gained great power ---- Süleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century.

A) across / after
B) from / over
C) within / by
D) in / under
E) over / before

Which is correct? I oscillate between B and D.

It's unclear to me because without more context we don't know the power relationship with Suleyman. However, because he was 'magnificent', I'd go for D.

B is correct - The Janissaries were taken as children from conquered Christian countries and raised as an elite guard in Constantinople. They eventually became extremely powerful within the Ottoman Empire.

What about B? What makes it wrong?

I'm not convinced that they had power over him- he seems to have been a pretty tough cookie:
Suleiman the Magnificent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Janissary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After reading the articles, I would go for D also. For this quiz one not only needs to know English, one needs to know 16th century history.

For me, B is wrong because the Janissaries did not develop power over the Sultan, they developed power under him. The Sultan was the boss.

The first part could be "in" or "from".

B cannot be correct choice since Janissaries were the soldiers of Suleiman the Magnificent and couldn't, and did not, have any power over him. :)
