Linguistics needn`t be taught to elementary students. 1. Is this sentence correct ? 2. What is the question tag for this sentence ? Is it "need it ? or "does it?" When am I supposed to use the auxiliary "do" in relation to the verb "need"? Thank you very much. Teia Last edited by Teia; 08-Nov-2006 at 17:33.

I suspect UK and US answers will differ here. I'd accept (and possibly prefer) 'need it'; but I've certainly heard 'does it'. The response, refuting the tag, though, would be 'Yes it does'. b

AmE speakers would be more likely to say "doesn't need" rather than "needn't", so we would most commonly follow with "does it". Nevertheless, If I were to use "needn't", I would follow with "need" it".
