Default taken in anything

"Complex carbohydrates provide a steady supply of energy, while sugars supply instant energy. Sugars taken in anything but very small quantities will actually lower energy and will tend to increase the amount of fat stored."

What does "taken in anything" mean here?

Is it saying that if you take sugars of small quantity in any food will lower energy (so you'd better eat lots of chocolates)?

Okay, let's see the sentence:

Sugars taken in anything but very small quantities will actually lower energy and will tend to increase the amount of fat stored

This means, that you better eat sugars in small quantities only, because sugars actually lower energy and tend to increase the amount of fat stored (So, it says that sugars are "bad" for you, so if you really want to eat e.g. chocolate, you should eat small quantities only)
