Default Quoting

Okay, I'll try to put this as simply as I can...I know that when a line is mentioned in a paper, it's quoted. For example, Lenny is described as "being tall, with eyes like coal." My question is as follows: If I'm quoting something a character says from the novel, do I still use the double quotation marks or single?(as if it were a quote of a quote) Lenny said, 'I must go'(16), or Lenny said, "I must go"(16). Thanks

We generally use single quote marks for a quote within a quote. Example:
  • "Bob said, 'I'll be right back.' Then he left."

Did I understand your question?

Well, I wasn't sure if you'd use single because you're quoting a line from a book and something a character said at the same time...so I'm not too sure.

In such a case you should follow my advice exactly.
