Dear teachers,
I have two questions to ask:
No.1
Bernard James was a scientist. To be __________ he was an ornithologist.
a. accurate b. exact c. precise
The key is 'b'. By looking them up in my dictionary I only have a rough idea of each. But I am not sure whether my understand is correct or not. Could you please kindly see if my explanations are correct or not?
'presise ' is used in contract etc.
'accurate' lays stress on whether it is true or not.
'exact' is difficult for me.
No.2
The group soon decided to find a clearing in the forest _________ they could make camp for the night.
a. where b. wherein
The key is 'a'. No problem. But why isn't 'b' correct? Can I understand it as 'in the forest'?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.
Jiang
I am beginning to doubt that your exercise book was written by a NES.
1. "Accurate" is incorrect, because "scientist" was already accurate.
Both of the other two are correct. They have almost identical meanings in this use -- clearly and accurately delineated.
2. As far as I am concerned, wherein would work in #2. It would refer to "clearing".
'In the forest wherein' doesn't seem right to me.
No, I've read it again and Mike is right. Yes they were in the forest but it was the clearing wherein they made camp
