Default as minor as major life event?

"Stress is energy that is associated with change; this can range from something as minor as getting out of bed in the morning to a major life event, such as giving birth or bereavement."

I'm confused about the point of this sentence. I mean...why is a major life event minor? Does "this" refer to "change"? And, why would it emphsize "getting out of bed in the morning"?

I think it really means this:

Stress can range from an event as minor as getting out of bed in the morning to an event as major as giving birth or being bereaved.
