which is better? He is not only a teacher but also a friend of ours. or He is only a teacher but also a good friend of ours.

They have different meanings.

"He is not only...." means he is a friend in addition to being a teacher.

"He is only a teacher..." means he is merely a teacher (not a professor, author, scientist, etc.).

I would not use the second. If the second meaning that mkwyner saw is intended, it would be better as:

He is only a teacher, but he is a good friend of ours.
