    Smile than

Somewhere I read we don't use than after elder. Is this correct?
Do we use elder just for the members of our family?

    I have an older brother.
    I have an elder brother.
My brother is older than me.
My brother is elder than me.
It is usually used for family members, but it can be for other families.
