Default stillness

Dear teachers,

Please read the sentence:

There was a strange stillness.

'stillness' is an uncountable noun. Does it mean this is a mistake? Or if 'a coffee' means 'a cup of coffee' what can this mean?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance.

Jiang

Hi, Jiang,
In descriptions they have the indefinite article, it means a strange kind of stillness.
Cheers :)
