any proper words in this situation??

When a person stepped out of a store after he found there wasn't the clothers he wanted after spending somewhat long time there, what words could he say to the clerks who helped him?

I thought of "Thanks for helping me but I can't find what I want." or "Sorry but I can't find what I am looking for."
Someone thought of "Excuse me."

Do these things sound alright?

And if he says "I'm sorry" to the clerk, is it alright? I heard that the words "I'm sorry" should be careful to use, in western world.

What do you think about this?

• Thanks for helping me, but I didn't find what I wanted.

I wouldn't say "I'm sorry" in such a case as you really have nothing to be sorry for.
