What does "as diverse as the National Rifle Assn. and the National Organization for Women" mean? I know the National Rifle Assn. and the National Organization for Women are two organizations. But why are they "diverse"?

They are expressing the belief that these two groups have membership lists and missions that are very different from each other. And they probably do.
