| Excuse me for barging in. You know me. I generally ask questions and do not post replies. This should be considered a question: Is it the magic word, or is it the time clause? 1-Have your room cleaned up by 5 o'clock. 2-Have cleaned up your room by 5 o'clock. PS. I'd say 'Have gone' doesn't work even with the magic word. Neither does 'have been'. I think 'Have read it by...' insists on the perfective aspect. The reading should be over and done with by that time. Last edited by navi tasan; 26-Nov-2006 at 23:14. |

| 'Have gone upstairs and tidied your room!' could be a statement rather than a demand. In written form it could be a missive left on a fridge magnet by an exasperated parent to a lazy and disorganised teenager. |

It took me a while to figure out how you read it! It does make sense though. A) Have ready your car at the door at five o'clock. B)Have cleaned your car by five o'clock. I don't know why, but I still read B as a perfective imperative, although A doesn't sound wrong to me, but just a bit unusual. I am not a native speaker though, as you know. (I'm saying this for those who don't know it.) |
