Hi, in the sentence " he is crying" Is crying a gerund? thanks so much

No, it is present participle which helps to form present continuous.

A gerund is a verb, ending in -ing, that functions as a noun.

Crying can make one feel better.

In this case, "crying" is the act of crying, so it is a noun.

Gerunds allow us to discuss actions as things.
