"The first complete Shakespeare I bought was the Oxford edition first published in 1905. My copy was a reprint of that edition in 1949 which I acquired in 1951! ...I bought it for ten shillings (50p) the day after seeing a production of Othello, by the Old Vic Company on tour at the Grand Theatre, ... That Oxford Shakespeare saw good service and I still have it. It's battle-scarred and has lots of pencil notes by me about productions I had seen."
Is "see good service" a common expression? I guess the writer means "provide good service", but I couldn't find the phrase in dictionary.

It lasted well- used for many years. It's used, at least in British English, but I wouldn't call it an everyday expression.
