    By a bend in the mighty Thompson River, I learned to swim.
    It seems like I don't get the meaning of 'a bend' in this sentence. Can anyone help me?

    Yes, he learned to swim at or by a bend in the mighty Thompson, where it probably flowed a little less fiercely.
