Question meaning of a word

What does " cover all the bases" mean ?

It means to be prepared for all possibilities, even unexpected ones. It is a metaphor from American baseball. When your "bases are covered" in baseball, you are making sure that your defensive players are alert and ready for their opponents to do something unexpected.
