"The marathon runner was getting thirsty and needing water."

Is the above grammar correct?

Yes, it is just fine, but it is more natural to say,

He is getting thirsty and needs water.

It's correct but you could also say;
The marathon runner was getting thirsty and needed water
or
The marathon runner was getting thirsty and in need of water.
