Anything wrong with this sentence?

I came across this sentence today, which to me sounds awkward:

"One of the most important issues with environmental protection is preserving fish habitats."

That sounds awkward to me - I'm inclined to say "...is the preservation of fish habitats." But is there anything gramatically incorrect about the original sentence?

They are about the same.

Preserving is a gerund/noun; preservation is a noun. Both are correct.
