Default Anything right with the sentence?

Many years will go by as a colonel Aureliano Buendia, standing by the wall in dread of shooting, casted his mind far back to that evening when his father took him along to watch the ice.

This is what I have translated from Russian.

Thanks in advance.

Hi PinkG

It is a little difficult but i will try.

Many years have passed since Colonel Aureliano Buendia found himself by the wall, frightened by the sound of gunfire. He cast his mind back to that evening when his father took him there to watch the ice.
