Is there any difference between the two following sentences:

The area below the chat window is called whiteboard.

and

The area below the chat window is whiteboard.

In this case you have to put 'the' in.

- is called( known as/referred to as) the whiteboard

- is the whiteboard

But not always;

The area between the trenches is known as no-mans land (or is no-mans land but not the no-mans land)
The area between the goals is the outfield. (but not outfield)
