What does "cause to be...." imply?

Hello,

I already checked the term in my dictionary but could not find the meaning. Then I googled the term and found a lot of sentences which include it. So, the term seems to be common phrase in contract form. But I still don't get the meaning.

AAA shall display prominently, or cause to be displayed prominently,the BBB trademarks in all materials, for all types of media, that relate to AAA's activities hereunder.

Does anyone help me to the meaning of "cause to be" and "materials"?

If and when they produce materials they have to include BBB trademarks, but at all other times, say when they have someone else produce, print some materials they have to ensure that these second parties also include BBB trademarks.

'materials' would mean any printed material such as documents, web pages, manuals, brochures, etc.

, that relate to AAA's activities hereunder.

I hope I can help you understand the meaning of cause to be displayed prominently. It means, I think, that the person didn't do it himself but had somebody else do it.

I'm not sure if the AAA mentioned here refers to the American Automobile Association, and the BBB the Better Business Bureau, but I'll use those as an example.

AAA has many independent agents across the country, most of whom print up their own literature, brochures, letterhead, etc. Since these materials are produced separately, outside of AAA's headquarters, AAA has no direct qualiy or design control over the text. But it is understood (and required) that whomever produces any material pertaining to AAA must include the BBB logo as well.
