Default secondary to etc.

Dear teachers,

I have four questions to ask:

No.1
They were organized as a secondary attraction to international trade fairs.
This sentence means that international trade fairs took the first place and they took the second place as far as importance is concerned. Is that right?

No.2
The love of amateurism and the belief that what is important is how you behave on the field, not whether you win or lose, comes from a time when the only people who played games seriously did not need to earn their living.
____________ it was common for rich men and universities in some countries to subsidize 'amateurs' by paying their bills or tuition fees.
a. Even then b. Even so
The key is 'a'. But I think 'b' is also correct. 'a' refers to time while 'b' refers to situation. Is that right?

No.3
Last time I asked the question
A man who can resist _________ except temptation is very likely to end up in prison.
a. anything b. everything
The key is 'a'.
After JSmiley patiently explained it to me I think I understood it. Now I came across another sentence:
Whoever comes first wins a gold medal but ________ who comes fourth gets nothing.
a. anyone b. someone
The key is 'a'. According to my understanding 'b' is also correct. Is that right?

No.4
Anyone who wants to become an Olympic champion must do without spare time. The sentence means 'They must spend all of their time practicing'. Is that right?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

Jiang

1. Yes.
2. No. Only A works there. The sentence refers to a time in the past. The phrase "even so" has a bit of a negating effect on what comes before it. That woul d not make sense here. "Even so" means "even though that is true".... What follows is something that doesn't quite follow from the first thought.

John is a very honest man. Even so, he cheats on his income tax.

3. Yes. Very good.

4. Yes.

I'm very proud of you!
