Dear all,
I do not understand the following sentence:
"Stick a fork in me. I am done."
Does this mean I am tired or something else?
If you stick a fork into a cake that is baking, and the fork comes out dry, then the cake is fully cooked, done. If you stick a fork into a roasting turkey or chicken and the juices run clear, then it is ready to eat, done.
This expression compares a person having completed a task to foods having been completely cooked.
Please, how common is it?
I hadn't heard it until I herad the Lou Reed New York album. I haven't come across it in BrE.![]()
Thanks, Mike.
