John failed his math test, although he was studying hard.
can i ommit the "he was" and say, "John failed his math test, although studying hard?"

"John failed his math test, despite studying hard"

No; it's 'despite' again- use 'despite' with a gerund.

No, that doesn't work. "Despite" puts the present participle in the past better than "although". The studying preceded his failed exam.
