Smile in the second......of last year

Hi,

Which one is correct and why?

in the second half of last year

in the second latter of last year

And what would be the antonym of our solution?

Thank you in advance,

m

In the second half- you could say in the latter half, but not second latter.

The first is correct. A year only has two halves, the first and the second.
The first half of the year would be, in some regards, opposite to the second half of the year.

There is an execise called "Language traps" in a Cambridge book. There are a list of incorrect sentences that have to be corrected.

In this book appears the following sentence:

"They moved house in the second half of last year"

In the last pages of the book there are the keys, and here says that insead of half we must use latter. I do not undesrtand why. I am still puzzled.

If the book says that, it's wrong. As Tdol said, 'latter' is acceptable to replace 'second' (in BE only, I guess - judging from Mike's post); but it, like second is an adjective: second latter is meaningless.
