In essence, it means that even if the item you bought is expensive, it will last for a long time. (According to the...often false assumption that expensive things are better)

If you buy a really top quality item [which will probably last longer and do its job better than a less good item] for a high price, you will remember the quality for a much longer time than you will remember the price.
