Meaning of Point states

Here next is a piece of short news I picked up on AP, but I don't understand the meaning of POINT STATES

At least nine deaths are now being blamed on the wintry storm; the blast had been Midwest in the point states. Hundreds of thousands of people have no electricity.

Anyone can help me?

I live in the Midwestern US, and I've never heard of "point states." Perhaps you mean "Plains States," as those were the states that were hit hardest (along with the Midwest) by the storm.

"Plains States" refers to the Great Plains, which consists of parts of Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming.
