    Default mean mean

    hi,

What is the meaning of the word mean in the following sentence?

''Your uncle is mean not to offer you a drink.''

    or rephrased:
''It is mean of your uncle not to offer you a drink''

    Thank you in advance,

    m

    Ungenerous. Inhospitable. Stingy. Penny-pinching. Parsimonious. Tight-fisted. A tight-wad.

'Mean' can sometimes mean 'hostile/unpleasant'. But I think in this context it just means he didn't like spending money.

You may be right, but I don't get that from the sentence.

Not offereing somebody a drink can have dozens of reasons. Inhospitable, rude, grumpy, holding a grudge, unfriendly, etc.
