Heralded and Announced
Which of the following is correct?
A) the bird chorus HERALDED THE SUN
B) the bird chorus HERALDED THE APPEARANCE OF THE SUN
And when using the word announced, which is correct?
A) the article ANNOUNCED THE BIRTH OF A NEW CHILD
B) the article ANNOUNCED THE NEWS OF THE BIRTH OF A NEW CHILD
Re: Heralded and Announced
In each of those cases I strongly prefer the first variant. Generally, it's a good idea to cut out words that add nothing to meaning; if you announce a birth, that's news. (Of course, maybe the family all knew anyway, but someone came in brandishing a newspaper and 'announced news of the birth'; but there I'd prefer some explicit way of saying that what he announced was that the birth had been reported.)
I mentioned my 'strong preference'. This is not to say that the wordier variants are unacceptable. They're quite common and widely accepted.
