I believe that BobM had a keen interest in botany; but only in one plant.

PS: I took "kill them" not from the sample quoted above, but from the fuller lyric:
Sheriff John Brown always hated me
For what I don't know
Every time I plant a seed
He said, "Kill it before it grows."
He said, "Kill them before they grow."
(I'm not sure about "before it grows", by the way; I think he may sing "before it grow".)
