I think you are looking for something, when you know it does exist and you are seeking for something, when you're not sure :) I think :)

It's an interesting distinction that you make between the two, but I am not sure I agree. :)

It is mostly about usage. The two terms are not used the same way. It does seem that when seek is used it is more likely to be about intangible things. Example: "John Kerry is seeking the Presidency."

(Note: You do not need (and shouldn't have) the for in seeking for something.

A Google search for the two terms should turn up plenty examples of each.
