a) We will wait for our friends until they come back.

To use the other choices you have to make a different sentence out of it.

We will wait for our friends because they said they are coming back.
We will wait for our friends because they said they will come back.

b)We didn't go to the park yesterday because there was a cold wind.

To use "it was" you would have to change things a bit.

A: What was the wind like?
B: It was a cold wind.
