Confused about 2 sentences

Hi there, this my first post. Hope I writing on the correct page:)

I have an exercise which asks rewrite the sentences in given form, can you help me?

1) He has taught himself economics and he likes to quote all sorts of facts and and figures so as to prove that the railways could prevent the closure of the more picturesque branch lines, and run them as a tourist industry.
