What is the right article in the following sentence?
Also please explain the reasoning.

'Walking a / the dog is good exercise.'

'The' is the normal article for talking about a pet, but here either could be used.

Either is correct.

Walking the dog refers specifically to walking one's own dog or another specific dog.
Walking a dog refers to walking any dog, walking a dog in general.
