How would I sound if I used an article 'the' instead of 'an' in the sentence?

I was about ... hour late.

well no offense but you'll sound ridiculous.
the is a definite article and an is indefinite article...and both are used in accordance with the situation.
i was about an hour late is correct usage because i 'm not specifying the hour but just specifying the margin of tim,e by which i was late. about an hour late means.....could be 55 min. or 1 hr 5 min late(which is not specified)
so we use indefinte article
