Default concerning whether and as to whether

    Dear teachers,
I have two quesions to ask:

    No.1
Not only have Aesop's fables themselves lived for nearly 1,500 years, but expressions from them have entered the various languages.
I think 'the' is a mistake. I don't need it. Is that right?

    No.2

In fact, there is some quesiton _________ such a person lived at all.
    a. concerning whether b. as to whether

The key is 'b'. No problem. Could you please explain why 'a' isn't correct?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

1 It depends- if it a restricted number of languages that we know about, then the article is correct.

I agree with Tdol about the first. Because of the use of "various", however, it is likely that the article is incorrect.

In the second "concerning" is close to correct. I would say that the question doesn't "concern" whether (or not) but that it is whether (or not). For that reason, I would use "as to".

    Dear Mike,
Thank you very much for your explanation. Now I see. For No.2 it is a single multiple choice so there is no context. However, I understand what you and Tdol explained. I'll leave it as it is.
