Default Quite, pretty, rather and fairly

I am teaching a lesson about the adverbs: quite, pretty, rather and fairly. Can anybody provide me with some helpful hints. If I was to engage my class, what types of questions could I ask in oder to get a response using these adverbs? Can the words quite, pretty, rather and fairly only be used as adverbs, or can they be used as adjectives?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

"Pretty" is the only one that can be an adjective.

Hi,
I didn't quite understand the question. I can only say their usage is complex and I had to make a rule (perhaps re-inventing a wheel - it was before my Internet era). It's fairly long and I am not sure you need it.

These are all adverbs of degree. You could ask the students to comment on a meal, an outfit, the weather, etc.

It is cold.
How cold is it?

The food was good.
How good was it?

Thanks alot for the help. You both have really helped me.
MikeNewYork, I am going to develop a series of questions and get the students to answer them using the adverbs of degree.

I have a quick question for Humble.
What do you mean by "I had to make a rule (perhaps re-inventing a wheel - it was before my Internet era)?"

Are these games you played with the students?

Hi, Jedstephen,
I do not usually play any games. I have made a lot of rules for my pupils; one of them is how to use and differentiate these adverbs.
When I was making it about 2 years ago, I didn't have a computer and couldn't find info as easily as I can now. I am nearly sure if I had an access to the Internet then, I would have found the rule ready and wouldn't have to toil unnecessarily . But I can see the silver lining: it's good to make brains work.

Regards
