Default nail in sb's/sth's coffin

Bolton applied the final nail in Alan Pardew's coffin, by thrashing West Ham 4-0.

Can any other verb substitute for apply here?

Also, can we also say "another nail" instead of "the final nail"?
This month's loss of $400 000 has applid another nail in the company's coffin.

Please refrain from posting until a native speaker has done so!

Thank you!

We gave you good alternative words for your sentence.

There was no reason for talkin' down to us.

Yes, you did. Thanks for that.
Anyway, I wasn't talking down to you at all. There must be some misunderstanding. I'm a student just like you.

It's just that I wish to receive the first answer from a teacher.

Thanks for your understanding.

Ok , friends again

But some advice:

- Never stop answering a thread you started and then make a new one on the same subject.

- Please stop using exclamation marks like you do, it offends people.

All of this is part of the NET etiquette

Do not call anyone friend; it can be offensive.

As another member, do not stipulate what to do; a rule having been broken, moderators will prescribe what should be done.

Enough on that.

Now, now children

You could say hammered the final nail.

Another nail would not necessarily be the final nail. Just a little bit nearer to the end.
