It depends on the situation. We can read: seven hundres and seventy seven or seven seven seven ( seven double seven).

and will you say triple seven, especially when you are telling a phone number to someone? I know it sounds strange, but I met a Saudi, he said it this way.

In a phone number, I would say 'seven, double seven'.

I never would have thought of 'double seven' at the end. The reason being, when I was a telephone operator, years back, we were asked not to use the word 'double' when giving out phone numbers. "Only give numbers listed on the phone's key pad," we were instructed. Apparently, or so we were told, someone had called in to report a fire and when given the number 911 as nine-eleven, the person replied, with great anxiety, 'There isn't an eleven on my phone!". True story. Apparently.

A man after my own heart! [I agree very strongly.] Many years ago, the Post Office (who used to run the telephone service in the UK) stipulated some rules about saying numbers; this was in the days when phones weren't in widespread use, and people weren't sure how to deal with them. 'Triple' wasn't an option in those rules. Today, people say whatever works for them. There are arguments in favour of this approach, but it can hinder communication. b
