Default good vs well

When someone asks how a family member is doing and the question is general, not specifically about health, is it wrong to reply that she is doing good? Or must you use she is doing well?

Grammar purists would prefer 'well', but you will hear people saying 'good'.

"Good" will sound uneducated to many ears.
