How many days will people take off during the christmas season?

Hello Everyone,

The Christmas season has come.In England and USA ,normally how many days will employees in a factory take off during Chiristmas?and when the holiday usually begin?

In the UK, the 26th is also a holiday, so a lot of people take the week off till new year.

Yes. A lot of businesses close on Christmas Eve and don't open until 2 Jan. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy - because there's no-one to do business with, more firms close down. My firm used to require staff to 'opt' to take 3 days leave after 26 Dec, which added to 25/26 Dec made a week. Because the new school term doesn't start normally until the 2nd week of Jan, people with families often take 2 weeks off [but this isn't a national holiday - people have to use up their annual leave].

Of course, shop-workers have much fewer holidays, and people in the entertainment and service industries sometimes have none. And things are different in Scotland; where 'Hogmanay' (the holiday around the New Year) is more important than Christmas.

According to your replies,people in England normally take 7 days off ,starting from Dec 25th .Do people in some industries begin to spend their holidays earlier,for example from Dec 22nd ?

Different nations and ethnic groups have different customs,Chinese don't have a fixed day like westners to celebrate the new year.New year Eve is usually in January or February.This year 's new year Eve is on February 17th and the holiday usully lasts for about 10 days ,starting from Feb 13th to Febuary 25th .

That is Why I am asking you here if people in England begin to spend their holidays before Christmas .

Well, there is no national holiday before Christmas. But schools close about a week before (my daughter's term ended last Tuesday), so people with families tend to add a few more days' annual leave on to the Christmas week. There's nothing official about this, but in the days when I used to cycle to work I found the roads less busy from the 3rd week of December until the 2nd week of January!

Annual leave is the number of days you can take as holiday during the year. In many places, people can choose or negotiate when they take them.
