Yes. A lot of businesses close on Christmas Eve and don't open until 2 Jan. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy - because there's no-one to do business with,
more firms close down. My firm used to require staff to 'opt' to take 3 days leave after 26 Dec, which added to 25/26 Dec made a week. Because the new school term doesn't start normally until the 2nd week of Jan, people with families often take
2 weeks off [but this isn't a national holiday - people have to use up their annual leave].
Of course, shop-workers have much fewer holidays, and people in the entertainment and service industries sometimes have none. And things are different in Scotland; where 'Hogmanay' (the holiday around the New Year) is more important than Christmas.
