Default 'the way of the dodo'

What does this sentence mean? "Oh!corporal punishment!! it went the way of the dodo!" I know the dodo is an extinct bird! Which other way can the phrase be used?

Dodos are extinct. "It went the way of the dodo!" means that the practice is extinct. In other words, according to the speaker, things aren't done that way anymore.
