Default Resist the standard appeal

Hello!
The following is about an ariticle " how to hire employee" and I am not sure some of the sentences which I marked red. Will you please paraphrase it?

Resist the standard appeal for resumes and references. He(CEO)asks production workers to come down and fill out an application. " it is interesting to see if they can find their way down here.

What does it mean by resist the standard....?

What does it mean by come down?

It means that he does things in a different way from the norm- he asks them to come in person instead of putting out a standard request for resumes.
