Post If clause

Hello everyone

I have a question about if-clause.

Could you explain to me please ?

Which is most appropriate to say " If I were you..." or " If I was you..."

Thank you for your help.

In this case, 'were'.

Some teachers and authorities are happy with 'If I was...' in expressions like 'If I was a carpenter...', but the expression 'if I were you' is so often used that it would sound very unusual if you said 'If I was you...'.
