what are the uses of had because sometimes im get confused on how to use it. Thanks!!

There are only two basic uses for had; the others are various meanings of the verb, HAVE:

Past tense: I had a sandwich for breakfast yesterday.
Past perfect: I had never eaten a sandwich for breakfast until yesterday.
