Default more is or more are?

Should I say, "More than one is available" or "More than one are available"?

"There is more than one here" or "There are more than one here"?

Singular and plural can be very tricky issues ion English, and you will see both forms being used. I checked Google and it appears that 'is' is five times more common than 'are'. There's often an issue with things that are mathematically plural, but we have the proximity of the word 'one', or another singular word, and many prefer to use a singular verb next to another singualr term, even when referring to a plural.
