eat too many sweet things

Dear Teacher

My brother and I like sweets and chocolates. Mother often tells us not to eat too many sweet things because it is bad for our teeth.

Are the words in bold correctly used? Are there better words to replace them?.

should be: "because they are bad for our teeth." :-)
