Does the word "dutch" mean you come from Holland or Germany? I am sorry, I really don't know the meaning.
In English, Dutch refers to Holland or The Netherlands.

In German, Deutsch refers to German.

It could be that you are the only recent poster who understands Dutch.

As for your second question, it's a little like German, isn't it? (I understand German a little.)

Hi Ronbee,

8) Your German sentence needs to be corrected just cos I feel obliged to.
Was ist das auf Englisch?
Henry :wink:
P.S. I've learned G-language for about 5 years.

Thanks. Actually, it has been a while since I have done any writing or speaking in German. I wasn't sure if it was aus or auf. (The German ist is close to the English is and I originally had is there instead of ist.

Ich spreche nur ein bischen Deutsch.

(I can't make umlauts.)

:)

I can speak Dutch, German, English and French so I can understand a lot of what you're talking. But I said in Dutch:

Ik hoop het niet, want dan kan die persoon alles wat ik in het Nederlands schrijf, lezen...

Translation:
I don't hope so, because than everybody can read what I write in Dutch...

ik = I
hoop het niet = don't hope so
want = because
dan = then

and so on...

A written text in Dutch looks a lot like German, but when you here it it's a lot different. In Holland we speak the 'g' very different than the people from Germany do.

Und ich spreche auch Deutsch, nicht sehr gut aber doch das du mir verstehen kann.
Et un peu France, bien que ne pas beaucoup.
En een heleboel Nederlands.
And I speak also English...

What kind of languages do you learn at school?
Spanisch perhaps?
I can also a little, little, little, little, little little, little bit Greek, because I can only say 'I' and I can count until five (I don't learn the language at school)

Thank you for the explanation.

Re:

Try:
  • I hope not, because then everybody could read what I write in Dutch.

(Say: "I can understand a lot of what you're saying.")
