Hello Everyone,
The following sentence is copied from Cambridge English Dictionary."All that make-up she wears actually detracts from her beauty, I think"She is actually very beautiful, but her beauty is damaged by her makeup as maybe the makeup doesn’t match her or the distinctive makeup make others pay more attention to the makeup rather than she. I am wondering here why the make-up make her less beautiful. Can you give me an exact example?Thank you allWeiqun![]()
The wrong make-up can spoil the attractiveness of a beautiful face. Suppose a girl has really beautiful eyes. but she put on a wrong colour of eye shadow that made her eyes look dull. if she had chosen a colour that matches her skin tone and the shape of her eyes, it would have increased the beauty of those eyes.
make-up may not always enhance beauty. the magic of make up lies in using the right colours and the right quantity.the right make up can beautify even an unattractive face, and a wrong make up can spoil the beauty of a charming face.
Thank you for your quick reply!![]()
Another senstence from Longman Dictionary is "One mistake is not going to detract from his achievement."
My understanding of this sentence is that he has made so great achivements that people can ignore the mistake he has made.I am wondering whether my understanding is proper?
Thank you very much!![]()
