Are the following sentences acceptable ?

1 He will receive an award during the awards ceremony . Can we do away with"s" for an award ceremony ?

2. Last year, I spent for about $1,000 on shoes.

Is the prepostion "for" necessary ?
3. The nickname " Police" was given to him he was in elementry school because his dad served as a policeman at the City Police Station. The nickname has since struck to him.

In addition to what Cas said, you can say "Last year, I spent about $1,000 for shoes.
